Though airlines are usually the quickest way to travel long distances, airport delays and weather-related issues can wreak havoc with your schedule. Last Tuesday, fog and runway maintenance at Gatwick Airport caused the diversion of 24 flights. Overnight maintenance was in progress on the airport’s main landing strip, leaving the second runway open for traffic. Because Gatwick’s second runway is a visual landing strip, the heavy fog that came in Tuesday night prevented most aircraft from landing. From about ten past midnight onward, 24 short and medium-haul flights were diverted to the Luton, Heathrow, Stansted and Bristol airports.
According to a Gatwick spokesperson, the engineering work on Gatwick’s main runway was planned well in advance and all the flight operators were aware of it. If not for the fog, which prevented landing on the visual-only second strip, it would have been more or less business as usual at Gatwick. This hardly matters to the approximately 1,500 EasyJet, Thomson and British Airways passengers whose flights were rerouted, cancelled or delayed, though.
On Wednesday, all passengers whose flights were diverted to other British airports were transferred back to Gatwick by coach. While no amount of planning on the part of travelers can prevent flight delays, diverted passengers would do well to hire Heathrow airport taxis rather than wait for an airport coach. The process of ferrying diverted passengers was ongoing as of Wednesday morning, as were disruptions in departing flights from Gatwick. Gatwick’s main runway was again operational as of 5:25 am on Wednesday and some of the delayed EasyJet flights departed before midmorning.
